How to pick a good reference photo

☹ Group photos ☹

☒ Faces are too smoll.

☞ Rule of Thumb:
If the face is the size of your thumb,
there aren't enough details
to scale up to a full-size portrait!

☹ Bad Selfie ☹

☒ Too close!
Framing cuts through chin and forehead

☞ Make sure the entire head fits in the photo.
The face should not be touching the edges of the frame,
and the headshape of the head should be discernible.

☒ Washed Out!

☒ Lost Details:
Cannot distinguish individual hairs

☺ Good Selfie ☺

☑ Face is fully visible,
with plenty of space between the top, and bottom of the head,
and edges of the frame.

☑ Clear details:
able to distinguish individual hairs

Face size, framing, and details.

1. ability to identify individual hairs like eyebrow or whisker.
2. if teeth are showing- do they look like a continuous shape, or can you see the edges between each tooth?

Keep in mind: What you see in the reference photo will be translated to the painting. If the subject is wearing a hat in the picture, they will be wearing a hat in the portrait.

Alternatively, you can send multiple reference photos for a cumulative image. This means details will be borrowed from all of the reference images and distilled into a single portrait.
